The Conflicted History of Alcohol in Western Civilization

Most wines of ancient times probably would turn a modern oenophile’s nose; those old-style wines in new bottles would more closely resemble today’s vinegar, with some hints of cider, than a prizewinning merlot. In the long term, high levels of alcohol consumption can cause health problems and increase the risk of many diseases, including several types of cancer, dementia, heart and liver disease as well as affecting mental health. According to the World Health Organization, 3 million deaths worldwide are attributable to alcohol each year. Drinking alcohol while pregnant can cause developmental disorders in the fetus.

2: Alcohols – Nomenclature and Classification

Alcohol also impairs memory, so people may struggle to remember what happened while they were drunk. As scientists around the world seek to make their disciplines and workplaces more inclusive, some hope that alcohol culture and policy will enter the discussion. “There seems to be a willingness at this time, in particular, to do something,” says Riches.

  1. Similarly, more sociological studies of how competing claims are advanced within the alcohol research community when the actions of corporate actors are implicated and contested may provide a complementary way forward.
  2. The books tend to be co‐authored or coedited by a combination of ICAP staff, academic researchers, and industry representatives’ 3.
  3. Interestingly, the respondent suggested that the concerns ‘perspective may be oversimplified’ rather than seeing the debate as oppositional in character (see ‘Opposing views to articulated concerns’ section in Results).
  4. Saint Paul and other fathers of early Christianity carried on such moderating attitudes.
  5. With strong bases such as sodium hydride or sodium they form saltsa called alkoxides, with the general formula RO−M+ (where R is an alkyl and M is a metal).

It was anticipated at the outset that there would be few dedicated studies, so this review is designed to synthesise existing perspectives as a preliminary investigation. The study focuses on the manifest rather than latent content of the articulated views, and accordingly adopts a thematic analysis using an inductive approach to the generation of themes 12. This approach has been described as being particularly well suited to appreciation of a given group’s conceptualisation of a phenomenon being studied 12. Despite the popularity of alcoholic beverages the world over, their potential dangers play a sinister leitmotif in human history.

For nearly 1,300 years the Church operated the biggest and best vineyards, to considerable profit. Throughout the Middle Ages, grain remained the basic food of peasants and beer their normal beverage, along with mead and homemade wines or ciders. The few critics of alcohol consumption were stymied by the continuing simple fact of the lack of safe alternatives. Hence, despite transitions in political systems, religions and ways of life, the West’s use of and opinion toward beer and wine remained remarkably unchanged. But a technological development would alter the relationship between alcohol and humanity.

This article is part of Nature Events Guide, an editorially independent supplement. Data were extracted from all included records by both authors using direct capture of relevant text from materials via cut and paste with Microsoft Word and NVivo. Both authors coded all data separately at first, then met to discuss preliminary themes and their labelling, and subsequent rounds of coding.

Finally, scientists explain the dreaded ‚red wine headache‘

Babor and Robaina 3 identified how industry payments to journals to produce special issues can become vehicles of dissemination. These findings are similar alternative to xanax otc to another study which identifies serious misrepresentations of evidence in submissions made to influence policy in Scotland 75. Babor and Xuan 73 described shortcomings of an ICAP report which; ‘seems to present conclusions that are inconsistent with its own data or unwarranted because of faulty survey methodology. The conclusions are also inconsistent with the considerable body of policy research that has been published in recent years’ 73. The books tend to be co‐authored or coedited by a combination of ICAP staff, academic researchers, and industry representatives’ 3. Given the prevalence of alcohol, it is perhaps little wonder that nearly all animals are physiologically adapted to the compound and enticed by it and its sugars—from the lowly fruit fly, which feeds its young with it, to birds, to elephants.

The search strategy for MEDLINE is presented in Appendix S1 (Supporting information). Titles (and abstracts where available) were screened by MM, with a random sample checked by JM (10% of all data). Eligibility was determined by both authors separately, with any disagreements resolved through discussion. Hand searching of the journals Addiction and Alcohol and Alcoholism was undertaken.

Previous research has examined how digit ratio may provide vital information concerning outcomes after contracting COVID-19, as well as oxygen consumption in footballers. If you are affected by the issues in this article, helplines and additional information can be found on Radio 1’s advice pages. „Essentially what happens is you have that increase in that chemical Gaba and that reduction in communication in your brain cells. „Stress can also affect how quickly you get drunk as when you are more stressed you get an influx of different hormones in the body including the stress hormone cortisol. Having zero tolerance is not thought to be practical because alcohol can be found in things like mouthwash and desserts.

Such considerations have been summed up in the “Paleolithic” or “drunken monkey” hypotheses, which posit that drinking is in our genes, whether for good or evil. These genes include those related to inebriation, which we share with fruit flies and which carry such fanciful names as barfly, cheapdate and happyhour. Other genes are involved in the so-called hormetic response, in which low-level exposure to a potential poison might contribute to positive physiological effects. The hydroboration-oxidation and oxymercuration-reduction of alkenes are more reliable in organic synthesis.
